II. Safety
A. Never:
1. Fire without permission
2. Retrieve without permission

B. There is a safety line- NO ONE MAY cross that line without permission!

C. Retrieving/Firing
1. There are 2 commands "fire when ready" & "retrieve"
2. After instructor says: "fire when ready", the students may fire 6 arrows
3. After firing, the student should set the bow down and step BEHIND the safety
line.
4. When ALL students have stepped behind the safety line, the instructor will say
"retrieve".
5. Only AFTER the "retrieve" command, can the students retrieve their arrows.
6. The next group may not nock their arrow until AFTER the instructor says: "fire
when ready"

III. Bracing (Pg. 59)- The process of attaching the bowstring to the bow.
A. The bow stringer- A string with a pocket at each end(attaches to the limbs)
1. Place feet on the bowstringer
2. Grip the bow and pull strait upward
3. Check to ensure the string is in the notches before firing
4. To unstring, this procedure is reversed



B. Push/Pull method-
1. Place the lower limb against the instep of one foot with the string in the notch
at that limb
2. Grasp the handle with the same-side hand
3. Grasp the loop with the other hand and slide into the notch
4. Check to ensure that the string is in the notches before firing

C. Step-through-method-
1. Step one leg between the bow and string with the lower limb across the ankle
2. Place the handle of the bow against the thigh so that both limbs bend
3. Grasp the upper limb and bend the bow moving the string into place
4. Check to ensure that the string is in the notches before firing

IV. Stance- The right-handed archer stands with the left side of the body facing the target.
Feet should be shoulder-width apart

V. Nocking- Placement of the arrow onto the string. The shaft is laid on the arrow rest,
then, the arrow nock is placed onto the bowstring

VI. Bowhold- During the process of shooting, the bow is kept in place by pressure on the
bow hand(not held).

VII. Drawing- The act of pulling the bowstring to the anchor point.
A. Don't draw the head to the string(Draw the string to the ANCHOR POINT)
B. Use a three-finger grip (One above the nock, two below the nock)
C. As the string is pulled back, the bow is rotated to a vertical position
D. The elbow of the bow arm is turned out (the other elbow is HIGH!)

VIII. Anchor point- Place on the archer's face where the string is pulled to on each draw. It
should be a CONSISTENT place, preferably the corner of the mouth

IX. Aiming (Pg. 75)
A. Bowsight aiming- (Most Recommended) Placement of a device on the bow to
sigh with(sights, toothpicks)

B. Instinctive- A bow sight is not used the archer simply looks down the shaft of the
arrow

X. Release and follow-through (Pg. 79)
A. Releasing properly is the most important fundamental of shooting.
B. The key elements to releasing are:
1. Relaxation
2. Concentration


XI. Scoring
A. 6 arrows per end
B. A round is a designated number of ends
C. Points:
1. Center = 9...........Gold
2. Next = 7............Red
3. Next = 5............Blue
4. Next = 3............Black
5. Next = 1............White
6. Petticoat = 0 (outside the white)

XII. Retrieving arrows
A. Make sure no one is behind you!
B. Place a hand on the target and push while you pull
C. Twist the arrow with the other hand while keeping the arrow strait
